The reading which I have read is titled “The Self” by George Herbert Mead. I will first summarize the reading, and then illustrate how Mead’s article helps me to understand the nature and formation of the self. Next, I will demonstrate how my self-identity varies according to my characteristics.
George Herbert’s style in his collection of religious poetry, The Temple, is very short, clear, concise, and gets to the point. Different from John Donne, Herbert structures his poetry around biblical metaphors and his struggle to define his relationship with God. Herbert places himself in church through many poems that are styled in an architectural form, however his emphasis is always on.
The poem “Easter Wings” by George Herbert is a poem full of deep imagery not only in its words but also in the visual structure of the stanzas. In Herbert’s poem why does he use a shape poem? Because he wanted this poem to have many different levels and meanings. Herbert also used huge amounts of mental imagery so that the reader can find new truths and meanings each time he or she reads.
George Herbert, having nothing like Donne’s apprehensions about his remaining manuscripts, still kept them private throughout his career. But Drury infers, and I think correctly, that was because, in Herbert’s case, “he was writing for God.” Fortunately, for readers of both Donne and Herbert, publication did come shortly after they died, only a couple of years apart.
