Where can I find copies of Yale dissertations? - Ask Yale.
At Yale, students become scientists by several means: by taking courses; by attending seminars; by informally interacting with other graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty; and by completing a doctoral dissertation, in which students design and carry out a program of independent research intended to address a significant problem in biology.
Length of Study. Students are expected to complete the requirements for the degree in six years of registration. The first two years are generally spent taking courses full time; the third is spent preparing a dissertation prospectus within workshops and completing all requirements except the dissertation; the remaining years are spent pursuing and writing up a work of original research.
History of Student Research The presentation of a dissertation has been one of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Yale for over 179 years. Initially, case reports and reviews of literature predominated, but as the scientific method was established in medicine, the faculty required that dissertations presented be based on original investigation either in the laboratory or.
All Yale students receive full financial support (tuition plus full stipend, including health insurance coverage) for five years of graduate study. This includes two years of coursework without teaching, two years of teaching, and a dissertation fellowship year.
The final dissertation research must include at least one published first-author, original research paper. Dissertations leading to three or more publications are not uncommon. As a last step in the graduate program, the student gives a seminar to which all faculty and students at Yale are invited.
In any case two must be faculty at Yale. It is possible, and occasionally necessary for various reasons, formally to change one’s dissertation supervisor. Following completion of dissertation research, the student is expected to return to Yale and spend another year or more in residence while writing the dissertation.
The course requirements, examinations, and 690 Project should be completed by the end of the second year, and all requirements for admission to candidacy must be completed by the end of the third year. The Dissertation and Defense must be completed no later than the end of the sixth year.
