Using Microsoft Word 2011 (Mac) for Your Dissertation.
Bibliographic software allows you to create databases of references which can then be stored, searched and used in conjunction with MS Word to input citations as you write your thesis. The two main types of bibliographic software are EndNote and RefWorks. The University Library offer advice on accessing and using bibliographic software.
Your Master's thesis or Ph.D. dissertation is the permanent scholarly statement of your research. This manual describes the requirements for formatting your manuscript, as established by UCI’s Graduate Division, the Graduate Council of the Irvine Division of the Academic Senate, and the University Libraries.
Formatting requirements. The Library's Theses Office assists with formatting theses, projects and extended essays for submission to the Library. Portable Document Format All thesis and dissertation materials must be submitted in pdf format. pdf files can be created with a variety of programs, including word processors (e.g. Microsoft Word) and full versions of pdf editors (e.g. Adobe Acrobat). MU’s computer labs feature the full versions of both Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.

These templates assist you with the formatting and production of your thesis, but you must ensure that your thesis meets SGS formatting requirements. If you choose not to use an SGS template you may use the tools provided for indexing, page numbering, etc. provided by your word processing software. Thesis Format The rules for formatting research degree theses are quite straightforward, but it is important that you get them right: with the exception of short quotations for which an English translation is provided, the thesis must be written in English unless the Graduate Dean has given approval prior to submission for examination for all or part of the thesis to be in another language.
